ANDREE SWANSON’S
INTRODUCTION:
OVERVIEW
OF THE CLASS
OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
This
course is designed to foster an understanding and appreciation
of effective interpersonal skills.
It addresses self-awareness, group process,
self-disclosure, effective communication, conflict resolution,
and team building.
DESCRIPTION OF WEEKLY SCHEDULE
For
UOP Online courses, weeks begin on Thursday (Day 1) and end on
Wednesday (Day 7). A typical week is shown below:
Day 1: Thursday
Day 2: Friday
Day 3: Saturday
Day 4: Sunday
Day 5: Monday
Day 6: Tuesday
Day 7: Wednesday
Consult the detailed schedule at the end of the syllabus for
specific due dates of assignments. Each student is responsible
for meeting the deadlines given. However, I will post periodic
reminder notes of upcoming due dates.
CLASS PROCEDURES
Main
Meeting
-- This will be used for discussion of the material. All
responses to the discussion questions found at the end of the
lecture, as well as class discussion topics should also be
confined to this Newsgroup.
o
Threading
– For each discussion question, exercise, etc., I will
initiate a new “thread” within the Newsgroup.
Please reply to this thread and do not create a new
thread. This will
make it easier to follow the flow of a conversation within a
Newsgroup. For
example, look for something like this:
Summaries, Week 1, thread.”
o
Questions
– I encourage you to post your questions in the <<Main
Newsgroup>> because more than likely there will be other
students with the same concern and everyone is able to read the
response to the issue. For
a question or concern that is not appropriate for the
<<Main Newsgroup>>, feel free to send it to aswanson@email.uophx.edu.
Should you have any serious problems, call me.
Assignment
Meeting – You will get a crazy error message
when you try to post to this, however, trust me your document
will appear.
Usually what I do is when I see an assignment posted, I
immediately send you an acknowledgement letting you know that it
arrived.
You will send “assignments” to this Newsgroup.
Watch for this designation in further course materials.
Class
Materials Meeting
-- Lectures will be posted in the class materials meeting. This
is where you will find all the lectures for this course; this is
a write-only meeting.
Learning
Team Newsgroups (A, B, C, & D) -- This is where you will meet with the members of your assigned
study group.
Travel
/ Absences
- If you need to travel or be absent for a period of time,
contact me ahead of time. I am here to help…but do remember
your minimum requirements for participation.

READING
The
readings for each are posted in this syllabus. The reading for
this class is plentiful and students are advised to read ahead
whenever possible.
RESPONSES
Discussion
questions are posted frequently to explore the content of the
class in more depth and at the same time to allow the students
to develop their collaborative skills in the class meeting.
Active participation is required and is a part of your overall
grade. In drafting your responses be sure to keep the following
guidelines in mind:
•
Be brief and to the point
•
Your answer should add to the discussion
•
Be collaborative not combative
•
Be positive in your approach
•
Be timely in your responses
PARTICIPATION
As with any online class, participation
is key to the learning process and you are expected to
participate at least 5
days each week in several areas. Discussions will take place in the Main Newsgroup. Your participation
must relate to the class material.
Participation
means:
Posting
at least 1 note on each of those 5 days each week to the Main
Newsgroup.
·
Posting
more than "I agree," or "that's
interesting," etc.
·
Contributing
to the discussion IN A MEANINGFUL WAY.
If
you plan to be away for any length of time, please consider
making arrangements to have a portable computer with you.
The
participation grade is based on my subjective opinion of each
student's participation. It includes:
·
attendance,
·
contributions
to class discussion, and,
·
contributions
to the group's efforts.
(Those
who show innovation, creativity, leadership and an extra effort,
without attempting to dominate class discussions, score higher.
Those who demonstrate average, active participation and attitude
score accordingly.)
Examples
of quality participation include:
·
asking
relevant and appropriate questions,
·
stimulating
discussion with relevant examples from the workplace, and,
·
supplementing
class discussions with timely articles.
STANDARDS
<<<<Pay special attention to this
Assignments
will be graded based on the following:
•
Appropriateness
•
Incorporation of theory
•
Organization
•
Understanding
•
Critical thinking
•
Writing skills
•
Structure
•
Format
In
all assignments strict attention will be paid to grammatical
correctness, including punctuation, spelling, syntax and style.
All assignments are due on the dates indicated. Late papers will result in a 1 point
deduction for each day subsequent to the due date.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic
honesty is just as important in the Online Campus environment as
it is on a University of Phoenix campus. Always submit original
work that represents your ideas, not the words of others. Words,
phrases and ideas from sources other than the student must be
cited correctly. Remember that any words taken from periodicals,
books, and electronic publications must be cited. However,
don’t forget that interviews, videotapes, and recordings must
be cited also. One area that is sometimes forgotten is words
taken from a public meeting or a private mailbox. These words
must be cited also.
===
Failure to cite your sources correctly is plagiarism.
For more information on documenting sources
using the APA style, refer to your Little, Brown Handbook, page
307 (APA tab).
The
University trusts each student to maintain high standards of
honesty and ethical behavior. All assignments submitted in
fulfillment of course requirements must be the student’s own
work. All assignments except those designed as “group” are
meant to be individual efforts. Group efforts are meant to be
equal efforts of all group members
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
All
assignments are to be posted by midnight. I deduct 1 point per day late.
The clock on late deductions starts 12 hours after the
due date time.
